That is just mineral buildup left over by evaporated water. You can't prevent it as long as you have water in the tank, you just have to scrape it off every time you clean the tank...

You didn't say if you have a freshwater, saltwater, or brackish tank. However, this is sediment left behind on the glass due to water evaporating from your tank. The residue is simply mineral or sodium . I wipe mine off the tank with piece of filter wool each time I perform a water change. Do not ever use any type of household cleaner to clean the residue. Also, I don't recommend using paper towels, especially those with patterns as the ink can leach into the tank and potentially harm your fish.

Its salt(or minerals) that is either naturally in the water,or you put in your tank(which you should do,meaning salt). Water evaporates, but salt doesn't, and builds up on everything it touches.Nothing to worry about, clean it with a sponge that has been soaked in tank water, and it will be fine.Just don't let it build up to the point that it is falling back into the tank,(marine tanks only)or it will harm your fish.

I once saw a product at Bed, Bath & Beyond that was a liquid you put into the water for a tabletop water fountain that prevented that white crusty mineral buildup. It was a small bottle, and I believe it said on the back that it was safe for fish. You might want to try finding that. I found a similar product on Amazon, but it's out of stock, and it looks like it will stay that way.

It could be you have "hard" water and it's the minerals in the water. The water in your area might also have a higher salt content than usual so it could also be that.
