They had a segment about the hate "church" that pickets funerals. The creepiest, most awful thing was hearing the children use language I wouldn't dream of using, and spreading the hate just as much if not more than the adults! That is scary and sickening. Did anyone else watch it?

Flowerchild, I missed 20/20 on TV last night, but I am well aware of the Westboro group. They've 'traveled' to my area and protested during a funeral procession for one of our local soldiers who was killed in Iraq. There was a group of military veterans who staged a counter-action....lining the streets and saluting the procession.

The group was relatively small, but you could not miss them. The hate and the threats that they spewed was chilling. My impression was that these people were far beyond fanatical.

They do not represent the baptist church or Christians. They may be part of some Nero Nazi or cult. They should be investigated by the IRS and have any money they collected taken from them. There should be a separation of church and state and if the are trying to make a political statement then the are no longer a church. The parents should be charged with child neglect and child endangerment. In a lot of states it is against the law to disrupt a funeral.

Just watched it too, Flower. Much worse than I had even imagined....the kids, oh God, those little kids reciting such horrible things. And stomping on the flag. Even if they can put a stop to the picketing (it's now supposedly banned in 42 states)....it's not going to stop the way these sick people feel and how they're bringing their children up to carry on the hate. This family...the Phelps...are the most frightening I've ever seen.

I missed the 20/20 show, but I have heard about this church. There is a group of volunteers called Patriot Riders that show up at funerals around here to keep people like that away. Especially at military funerals or any death that has been controversial.

Penny gave a website that covers it pretty well. Freedom of speech is a two sided sword. In this case, the sword is disemboweling the Smitty. Where does such hatefulness begin.

I am a Christian, Christianity is a gentle, forgiving stand that is
built around the "turn the other cheek" philosphy.

God is love, not outright hate.

No. I didn't see it, but I've been hearing about it. And I believe in my heart and soul, that's another bunch of loonies that fits right in the same category as Adolph Hitler, Jim Jones, Sadam Husein, David Koresh, Charles Manson and a few other crazy people. Look how many they brainwashed.

I just found this. It's from ABC News.

I saw part of it from a link someone pu ton here...I thnk it's disgusting! I really truely believe that people who harm others in ANY way and claim to do it in the name of god are completely wrong.... AND They are passing such judgement onto people for no reason...It is gods job to judge, and if youre not religious..then you should still see that there should be limits on how badly you treat others....IF god was so against homosexuality, and IF he wanted to punish people for it, I dont believe he'd punish the ones in Iraq. I'm sure His Angels are on deployment over seas as well as asked in many people prayers at night!!

I'll see it later this evening in the Pacific Time Zone. Waiting to see if ABC or any of their "crack journalists" mention the fact that Westboro Baptist Church never protested at any of the funerals for the 7,500 service members who died on active duty between 1993 and 2001, when the "don't ask, don't tell"policy took root in regulations.

This group is going the way of the bigoted racist parents who taught their children to use the n* word, spew hate for all other cultures, skin tones and sexual orientations. Disgusting! So sad another generation is growing up misguided and bred and born of ignorance.

No, I didn't see 20/20, but I agree it's terrible that kids are being raised this way. That whole situation is so awful and something needs to be done to put a stop to these people.
