Heck, she doesn't really need the one from your yard either. If you cut the top off a pineapple and just set the thick bottom portion of the top of the pineapple into the ground and keep it moist, it will root on it's own. Keep the plant in full sun. They take a decent balanced 6-6-6 fertilizer and a little extra chelated iron. The plant would do well in Texas growing zones 8 or higher (Austin, San Antonio, Houston, or El Paso and further south). Any further north than that and freezes are too common and the plant won't survive very well.

They are very easy. Go to the store and look at the pineapples. Some just have the one head on top but others have the main head, places little ones. Buy one or more of these pineapples and tear off the little head.

You then just plant the bottom part keeping the leaves above ground. (DO NOT PUT THE WHOLE THING UNDERGROUND)
Just water everyday or every few days and give 18-24 months for a pineapple to begin growing.

Just give it a bit of fertilizer.

Care is the same as any house plant. They're in the bromeliad family and like being watered in the cup formed by the leaves.

To start one from a pineapple: Cut off the top. Strip off 1" of lower leaves. Plunk in potting soil, covering the stripped leaves. Water and wait.

My first one produced a pineapple after a few months.

I have a pineapple plant sitting next to me which I bought at Walmart 2 yrs ago. I sit it in the South sunny side of the house in the winter. I water it and water it and water it, then in about May or so I take it back outside to fertilize it with Miracle grow and it gets bigger every ear, but no pineapple.
I am beginning to think maybe pineapples dont grown in a pot in the house.

You might also include with the plant, how to start them from a store bought pineapple. Tell her they like full sun, do not leave in freezing weather, they will die. If she's going to plant it, do so facing the west side of the house. Feed early spring thru late summer. In the heat, water every other day,if not daily. And in seven years, she will have a pineapple! Byee
