Nobody knows when the world will end, let's just get that right out there first of all.

And yes, you're partially right. I believe it was the Maya who said that 2012 is the end of the Great Cycle... people take this to mean the end of life. Problem is that it's just that, an end of one cycle and the beginning of another.

The reference of alignment that comes alongside this story a lot is the alignment of the Sun, during the Winter Solstice, crossing perfectly the equatorial plane of the Milky Way. Since our Solar System only enters this plane twice each GALACTIC REVOLUTION, it's a pretty rare occurrence indeed, needless to say. The fact that it happens on what astronomers consider a special day just adds to the hype & excitement.

I mentioned the Mayan Calendar, let me explain that a bit more - they had 20 day "months", 18 a year, revolving every 20 years, or "Katun" (generation, if you will). Each 20 Katuns was called a Baktun, and 13 of these made a "Great Cycle" (about 5125 of our years). The current "Great Cycle" will end in 2012. Nothing really mystical about it, but interesting nonetheless. Hope it helps.

No, it is not and the Mayans did no longer say this form of element. A crackpot named Zecharia Sitchin claims that's what the Mayans meant by having their calendar end a cycle on Dec. 21, 2012, however the Mayans did no longer think of that's what they meant. they have predictions going way previous that date, and that may not the 1st time their long count form calendar has complete a cycle. no one quite knowledgeable pertaining to to the Mayans (consisting of the Mayans themselves, who're nevertheless in existence) will inform you there is this form of prediction. As for the medical "predictions" you will hear approximately 2012, none of them undergo lots resemblance to quite technological understanding the two. a lot of them come from a woman named Nancy Lieder, who thinks she heard it from area extraterrestrial beings and who initially envisioned the tip of the international on greater than a number of till now dates. She's merely dusting those predictions off one greater time.

From what I understand this is just when the Mayan calendar ends. Some people speculate that this is the end of the world because once again the mayan calander just abruptly stops there, also because Nostradomus forcasted this year as well. There was a whole history channel special on this. I wish I could recall more.

ya but its a load of bullshit. it says in the bible that no one can predict the end of days. some people think that this year signals a global shift towards a peaceful planet. also the mayans must have been very lazy to just DECIDE that they wanted to stop making the calendar to 12/13. and in a drumming workshop i went to, we talked to the Earth Mother, and she said she doesnt plan on blowing up at any time. but if the mayans were right, i guess well find out.
