Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan?

Question

for my class we have to choose a book by an Asain Author.. i chose the kitchen god's wife.

is it a good book to read?

i'm usually into Action, Mystery, and Romance. do u think i'll like the book. all the summaries i read didn't really inspire me but it was the only book that sounded interesting in my class..

a lot of ppl say its good, but they don't give an explanation.

There is quite a bit of action in the book - it takes place during WW2 when Japan was attacking China. There's no traditional mystery or romance, but it is a very compelling story, with heroes and villains, and comparing traditional Chinese life with modern American life. There's actually a lot that the summaries probably leave out (violence, rape, living in fear of bomb raids) and it is actually a pretty lively book. When we read it in high school, almost everyone enjoyed it.
