I'm doing a bottled ecosystem project for biology and I have no clue how to start it. We are suppose to have the ecosystem last for 2 months. Should terrestrial go on top, so when the water evaporates the plants are watered? What organisms should I put in there that will last 2 months. What plants could give off a lot of oxygen to keep the organisms alive( its Fall). I live in Montana and I need organisms that I can get fast.

Anything is appreciated!!!!!!! Thanks

From the book "Bottle Biology", there is a structure you can make with some 2 liter soda bottles. The one I am thinking of is called a TerrAqua column, and it has exactly what you are looking for. Here's a link to full instructions: http://www.bottlebiology.org/investigations/terraqua_main.html

I have had my bio students do this, and it works out really well. Makes me want to make one right now!

Plants in terrestrial ecosystems rely on animals or wind to fertilize the flowers and distribute the seeds, aquatic plants don't rely on animals.

No harm meant here but my first reaction was to maybe use a bottle of coke a cola??? and I am sure lots of insects and stuff will soon inhabit it and get high on it and love it. Surely microbes and stuff would last 2 months in a bottle of stale Coke????
