I thought the element nitrogen was number 7 and had the weight of 14... therefore the electrons would be 7 as well as the protons.

The element number is usually equal to the number of protons in an atom. If that atom is in a neutral state, then there will be an equal number of electrons. Therefore, since nitrogen is element 14, there will be 14 protons and 14 electrons.
