If you had a pond or a 150 gallon tank, sure, but the JD will continuously attack the Goldfish, and the Goldfish's waste will poison the JD. Goldfish will reach 10 inches (Fancy Goldfish) or 1.5 feet (Comet Goldfish), but either way, your JD would tear them apart eventually.

EDIT: JDs also get about a foot long, so nothing less than a 55 gallon tank is suitable for it alone. To add on a Goldfish, you really need a pond...
EDIT 2: Have you ever seen a foot long Jack Dempsey? I have. All I'm saying is that it is possible, and not THAT rare, not that a foot is their average size.
EDIT 3: Our goal isn't to tell them what is possible, it's to tell them how they have the best chance of keeping their fish alive. Would you suggest a nano reef tank to somebody who has never kept fish before? I hope not. The same prinicpal applies here; sure it is possible to keep a JD in a 30, but would it not be much better for the fish and the owner if it was in a large tank? Hope for the best, expect the worst.

Absolutely not. I have goldfish and a Jack Dempsey, and from experience I can tell you Jacks grow exceptionally large and they do so incredibly fast. Your Jack would definitely kill the goldfish. Not to mention the fact that goldfish prefer cooler water temperatures and Jacks need heaters. The Ph levels they need are different, There are a number of reasons why you shouldn't house your goldfish with your Jack Dempsey. Please don't!

How many gallons, and for how long? They would be suitable tank mates, for a short period,4 to 5 months, then the Dempsey would get territorial, and the gold fish would have no defense.
Plus the fact that one,the gold fish is a cold water fish, and the Dempsey is tropical, and require different water temps.
SOOP NAZI is a very reputable adviser on fresh water fish, but,Jack Dempsey, rarely grow to be bigger than 10 inches.
30 gallons is barely enough for 1 Dempsey,I had one in a 30 gallon for 12 yrs,not advisable,but,possible.
Research them to find out more info on them.
Reputable sites with hands on info will tell you the same thing.30 gallons is big enough for 1.
The ones, web sites,(and people here) that get info from other sites will tell you differently.
Good Luck in choosing!
