I had the 3 red rings of death around 1 month ago and then like you just restarted and it worked just fine.
Then last week it came back and I have tried to restart it around 50 times and it's dead.
I am not happy as I don't use mine much at all and I think it would have had around 100 hours use since I got it 18 months ago.

Well, mine just did the red ring tonight of all things. It did do it once a few months ago, but that was it and tonight it decided to do it again this time, it stayed that way. I mean, it started up find and I was going to play another satisfying game of Dirt , played the CD and thats it, now it didnt do antyghing after. I turned it off and then back on and the red lights appeared. I took off all the plugs and hard drive off and reconected but nothing. sh** on a stick!

the rings are signs of a malfunction. also if you have a power surge it will cause the rings to flash there is no true way to tell if your console is defective xbox service will walk you trough the same steps as they use with us all.
