the stuff i am looking for is a liquid that mixes with the water to keep it from oxidizing(?) and causing the vinyl matress to decay. also, any idea where to find this?

Waterbed water conditioner.
You'll find it at Bedroom One, or any waterbed store. You could probably also find it at Walmart, Kmart, etc.
