I ask because I'm listening to "Forming" by the Germs and it is absolutely fantastic for being a bunch of punk kids with most likely less than proffesional instruments, definately less than professional skill level, some good old fashion attitude, a garage, and a crappy tape recorder. And quite impressive lyrics! What a great single.

Best debut album is maybe Pink Flag by Wire or the Velvet Underground & Nico. But then again maybe it's the Modern Lovers. Or The Clash. If you count Electric Warrior as Bolan's debut as T.Rex (instead of the old Tyranosaurus Rex) then that'll be a candidate.

But I'll say the Ramones Ramones was the best debut album and for now "Another World" by Richard Hell & the Voidoids.

Oh, and the single has to be from a band that released at least one album, not one that just released some singles and fizzled out, even though that's where some of the best singles out there come from. Or else my favorite debut would be "Horrorshow" the B-side of English punk band the Scars debut single.

Hah! I've heard that song by David & David. My sister wanted me to find her a song by them and I heard that in the process. You thought you had me!

Kick Out The Jams is a goody, but it does drag occasionally. For example, "Starship" should never have been performed.

Go on Youtube and look up the MC5 and watch them play "Looking At You", amazing.

The Sex Pistols were a close choice for me, I almost said "Anarchy In the U.K." and NMTB.

And "(I'm) Stranded" was also a close one, I decided to go with something not as conventionally punk though.

For albums, there's Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin, Are You Experienched? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Please Please Me by the Beatles, Fresh Cream by Cream, Kick Out the Jams by MC5, Ramones by Ramones, etc. So many to choose from.

I'd say Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols, if it could be considered a debut album, since it was the Sex Pistols' only album anyway. The impact it made was so incredible it managed to get the Pistols to more or less third place for greatest punk rock bands of all time.

As for debut singles, "Maybellene" by Chuck Berry is great.

Plenty of debut singles and albums made me sit up and take notice, but very few like PRETENDERS. "Brass In Pocket" just didn't sound like anything else that was out at the time, and it still sounds just as fresh today. Coming a close second would be "Welcome To The Boomtown" by David and David, from their only album, BOOMTOWN. (Good luck finding THAT one.)

EDIT: Good for you! There's not a whole lot of people I know who have even heard of David and David. Since you seem to be heavily into punk, here's another group that takes a walk on the REAL wild side: Nick Name and the Normals. They've split up since 2005, (formed in 1999-2000), but the energy is every bit as real as anything that came out from The Clash's early days. I just don't know if you're ready for songs with titles like "I F***ked Your Boyfriend" and "Porno Di Giorno".

Music From Big Pink by The Band is an incredible debut. I'm too tired to go into details of why it's incredible, but I wanted to answer :-)

For the album, "Days of Future Past" by the Moody Blues (November 1967). **Incredible** album. I grew up listening to them because my mom was a big fan of them when she was a teenager (and still is now!).

As for the single...god, I've no idea. There are just so many that it could be...
