If Wilde were to make his observation about today's society he might well say: Dissent is extremely detrimental to the chances of advancement, since everyone in this socially-engineered society must pretend to hold exactly the same opinion. Reasonable objections are dismissed out of hand as stemming from a mind polluted by racism, sexism, homophobia, or all three.

Absolutely not. A society should not be called a good one if arguments are not a part of it. And NOT EVERYONE has the same exact opinion. That's why we are so called human beings, because we have minds that think very differently. Everyone's unique!

Wilde was being facetious when he wrote that statement. Think of how boring life would be if everyone thought the same, and had the same opinions on everything. There would be no room for creativity or new ideas. It would not only be impossible, it would also detrimental to society.

I have to agree with Ari on this one. Arguments are a fact of life and don't have to be vulgar if people practice civility.

Oscar Wilde's "good society" was imaginary.

So, does this mean debate is extremely vulgar? If there is no arguement, there is no challenge. People who do not argue, follow. No one should follow.

Hmm..
Then I am extremely glad that I do not fit into "GOOD" society.
It would be unbelievably dull!
