My betta fish seems to have torn his dorsal fin nearly off. This happened a couple months back. He doesn't seem worse for wear, but the would has swollen and grown dark, as if he is growing new scales there but no new fin. The dorsal fin is attached still by a very tiny bit. I thought at first it was fin rot, but it is not the typical color and is not bleeding at all, not even when it first happened. Has this happened to anyone else? Anything I ought to be doing to help him along? Thanks!

lol, samG it's actually SIAMESE fighting fish, they originated in Siam which is now Thailand.

anyway, I can't say I've ever seen bleeding from fin rot or even breakage. could be fin rot, but you should have seen it happening rather than it suddenly be missing.

I suggest making sure the water is kept very clean and adding aquarium salt if you don't already (1/2 a teaspoon per gallon, dissolve it before adding).

other than that I'm not sure I know what you're describing, and a picture would help. however the instructions above will help over all health and can make sure wounds don't get infected and can heal.

As long as you keep the tank clean, you shouldn't have any problems. I'm assuming he is in a filtered and heated tank, so he shouldn't have problems with temperature. 80 degrees is a great temperature to keep your Betta at, and you may want to add some aquarium salt to reduce any encourage more rapid recovery.

EDIT: As Kylie said, you shouldn't see bleeding from fin rot OR fin breakage. Fins do not have blood running through them. The only time you may see bleeding is when the flesh is torn as well.

what length tank? is it heated? filtered? how a great number of the water did you alter? what's the water temp? greater documents please ----- 1gallon is in simple terms too small, 2.5gallons is the bare minimum and a heater is a would desire to (it would probably be a minimum of 78F and as much as 82F) i could propose an improve as quickly as you could, yet for now, upload some aquarium salt (or any non iodized salt witohut ingredients) to his tank, upload a pair of million/2 a teaspoon as a results of fact this is a gallon. do a 25% water substitute each and every 3 days and upload sparkling water that has salt further to it. if he does not start to advance some back in each and every week you will would desire to get some meds for fin rot.

His dorsal fin might have been ripped by decors in the tank.
Might be.
