It depends on age but in general you should try to get between 7 and 8 full hours of sleep a night. Teenagers and older adults need more.

I don't think there's a 'normal' amount because everyone's body is so different with so many differing requirements.
Teens need the most sleep though. Some teens need as much as 10 hours nightly to function. Studies are being done on this now and there is talk of someday offering flex schedules in some schools to accommodate those late night study sessions and the need for more sleep during the morning hours. Students would be able to report to school at later hours in the day. Would've saved me as a teen when I couldn't even unblur my eyes until 10 am!!

The general population consensus seems to be anywhere from 6-9 hours a night.

It depends on the age of the person. Children and teens need 8 to 10 hrs. As you get older, you need less sleep. This is why so many elders wake up in the middle of the night. They do need sleep, but many take naps during the day and therefore sleep less during the night.

Some may need more. It depends on the person.

Medically its at least 6 hrs. In reality it may not be required, even less than that would do. There r some jobs where a person works more than normal hrs e.g. soldiers at war. It depends how u get used to it. Think bout the ppl having insomnia, don't we find them in good health? They only remain mentally disturbed at night sleep time due to it. Do u get me.
