You've gotten some good advice but I thought I'd add my two cents. Class will do what it's designed to do. Help you learn acting techniques which will in turn help make you a better informed actor. You will become a better actor by employing the techniques that you learn and putting your best efforts into the class, not focusing on something as worthless as being famous. BTW, no one will discover you. You work hard training in class, if you get good roles in theatre good for you. Maybe you can do an agent mailing and invite them to come see you perform and perhaps if they like what they see they will set up a meeting with you, but no one will come in off the street and hunt you down because you were the best munchkin in Oz.
In class you will most likely do lots of improv, some scene study, maybe some audition techniques and some on camera work, but really that's just a guess. You need to call the places you're interested in attending and ask. Any place that tells you will be discovered by attending their classes is a scam. They shouldn't try to sell you pictures or conventions or anything else. You are going to class, period.
good luck,
Marianne

Acting classes are a tool like English classes... they are what you make of them. In the classes you will learn about projection, relaxation, reflecting, emoting... the list goes on and on. Different schools of thought about acting, so what your teacher will be teaching is hard to say. But, expect to wear comfortable clothes to move around a lot... expect to be silly & serious... expect to be put on the spot... expect criticism.
Taking an acting class will not make you famous. It can be a step in the right direction, just as taking a Biology class will get you one step closer to being a doctor. But, there are a lot of other factors that play a role in becoming a professional actor-- talent (somethings you can't be taught), a castable look, a likeable presence, luck, connections.... Research it, and follow the advice of experts. Read biographies of your favorite actresses & you will find that the quickly discovered are rare... most of them have paid their dues along the way.
I would find a local theatre that offers classes taught by degreed professionals. Do NOT sign up at an "agency" to take their classes with the promise of getting jobs. I don't know your age, but maybe take a class at school or local community college. These people have nothing to gain by your success or failure.... they are not trying to sell you anything. They are simply passing on their knowledge of the craft they love. You pay a flat & reasonable class fee... and no one will try to see you headshots, or a portfolio, or charge an agency fee. You should audition for roles... not pay for them.

Let me collect my thoughts here... First if you wish to pursue acting there are many free ways to begin. Community theatre
for one. Check your local papers for anything about perhaps auditions and so forth. Acting classes are not free. Nor are good coaches easy to find. Many take your money work with photographers and milk you. So you must be cautious where you go. Pictures are a whole can of worms, take just digitals clean faced, commercial, serious, lite & another mood. Early morning day light best and bring a big huge white cardboard page for like posters... for lighting below you...
Do not expect to be famous. Try to be honest , try to learn. Always learn. Above all be careful. Many end up dead as the predators know just how to lure the bait.

95% of the union actors are OUT OF WORK
Most survive as telemarketers or waiters in restaraunts.
You need to have something they want and there is no rhym or reason.
Seymour Phillip Hoffman was a SOLID bread and butter actor prior to doing Capote.
He was on TWO in shows four, five times a year.
He did commercials.
He apparently found a nitche as a character actor.
When there was no TV he did live stage and even directed.
Now TV is $1,000 a day and he often got 3 or 4 days work so that's close to $5,000 plus residuals.
Live stage is more like $200-$400 a week.
Acting classes build your skills, help you overcome stage fright, teach you how to improvise, build a character, costume yourself and work as a teach.
It teaches you stage moves that are ONLY used on live stage.
It teaches you ever aspect of the theater from ticket sales to the prop room to set design, to lighting, to pulling the curtains open and closed.

chances are no one will discover you, even if you are good, you will probably have to work at getting just a small part in a movie or play. what happens in acting class is that you pay your money, you go to class and you do what the teacher tells you to do. but the very first thing you have to do is to get your parents to agree that you should try to become and actress, because you will need their help a lot.

shoot for the moon and you'll end somewhere amongst the stars
in acting class they make you do tongue twisters and improvs, so you like have to make up a play with people. They tell you what role you look like you'd play, work on your facial expressions. They may help you practice working on commercials.
You MUST have extreme confidence. If you have personality, perhaps you will be discovered. But showing up on time is half the battle.
What acting school are you planning on attending? Beware of scams, they don't get you anywhere.

Whoa there! You're getting a little ahead of yourself there, don't ya think? First you'll have to get the classes (obviously). Then you might want to get an agent, trust me, who can market you and try to advertise your acting talents. The chances of you automatically being discovered and becoming famous just from acting in a play are about a million to 1. You'll have to go into auditions and then callbacks, many many callbacks. It takes alot of work to become famous. I wish you the best of luck and hope you learn from my experience.
