The Koi will have whiskers, the Goldfish will not.

EDIT: Feeder Goldfish come in all sorts of colors, not just orange, so please, don't go to the store and get a Goldfish thinking it's a spotted Koi...

Koi are expensive, feeder goldfish are not.

Koi generally have something that looks like whiskers, feeder goldfish do not.

However, plain old ordinary 10 cent feeder goldfish have survived better in my Koi pond than the Koi (they are both carp), with some of the goldfish reaching 11 inches in length already, and they look just as cool as the Koi.

The price is the first clue, and the whiskers is the second. If you can find a feeder with whiskers for 15cents,BUY IT!

The other differences are..the size, and and the eating habits, and the water conditions.

The feeder fish has 2 blade like tail. A koi has more colors, white black red orange etc. A feeder goldfish is orange only.

Hi Ally, if you have the patience simply wait 20 years, the Goldfish is the one that's around 18" long while the Koi will be almost double that!
