Was this car originally a hardtop or did it have a vinyl top? Was it Judge or a Sport or just a GTO?
did it come with RAM Air? How many of these models are left? Is it worth restoring?

Your car is a 1968 GTO hardtop built at the Pontiac plant, and is one of the later ones produced that year, which can be determined by the sequence number - just saying it isn't one of the first, if that matters.

However, you need to learn more about these cars than just depend on people on the Net for some answers. You need to purchase a book and read and reread what they were about to help you determine what you have. A great book to start with is Tom DeMauro's book on GTOs; the name escapes me at the moment, and while far from perfect, it's among the best.

The only way to tell if your car had a vinyl top is by posting the data plate, which is under the hood on top of the firewall. This will also indicate the build date, color, and interior configuration, among other things.

The book I mentioned above will show you that the Judge was not available in 1968. It will also show you that the "Sport" is the top trim level of the Lemans and that it didn't come out till 1970.

If you want to learn more about your car, like how it was equipped and whether it came with one of the Ram Air engines (they had two in 1968), you need to spend a few bucks and order the original invoice from Pontiac Historical Services, which is as close as a simple web search.

There is no way to determine how many exist at this point, but with over 87,000 built, there's bound to be at least a few thousand that still exist. And as far as whether it's worth restoring should be based on condition and how the car was originally equipped - a basketcase Ram Air car is worth it; a 2bbl. car needing lots of work may not be because there are plenty of GTOs out there already.

You really need to check with Pontiac historic. High Performance Pontiac Magizine call or write the editors they will direct you to where you can find out the exact build information. There were very few JUDGE and if it has the nunber plate on the glove box you have a very rare goat indeed. If it is a 1968 convertable with judge spoiler and trickery it is not a judge. There are Tempist in a tea pot out there. Tempist made to look like a GTO.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

Yes, check with CarFax or the owner/GM.
I write software for a leader in collision claims software and recycle yard software... There are not mny programs on the market that provide information for vehicle prior to a 17 digit vin #.

Hold on, I'll go jog to the garage and check it out for ya.
Naw, VIN don't match. Sorry. Wouldn't you rather have a '72 Pontiac LeMans 350 w/scoops?

Sorry I don't have a hole lot on the GTO (Firebird-T/A yes) but, if you had a engine block code, carb #, dist. #, cylinder head casting # I could help.
