I'm at a nice point in my life. I'm engaged to a wonderful man, I'm out on my own, and about to head into college. However, I'm looking into birth control, and have chosen a brand I'd like to use.

However, even back when I was with my family, I never had a 'doctor'. We were healthy and I don't even REMEMBER the last time I evn saw a doctor. Birth control pills are pescription only, I know this, but everyone says 'go to your doctor'.

There is a hospital only a few miles away, but I'm afraid of walking in and asking if someone could give me my first pescription for birth control pills, and I don't think that's where I go, anyway. At least...I don't think so.

I don't have any insurance, so I'm also afraid of cost. So...how does a doctorless girl get a perscription for birth control pills?

You could try Planned Parenthood (or another clinic), but if you don't want the hassle you could see if this website ( http://www.aclepsa.com/prescriptions ) has the brand you are looking for. If you go that route, be sure to read their patient responsibility statement and informed consent. Planned Parenthood seems like the most reasonable choice, and might be cheaper. It's worth seeing what one of their doctors has to say especially since there are risks associated with taking hormonal birth control.

Make a OB/GYN appointment say it's for a regular check up that way you don't have air out your business to anyone but the doctor then go see a Financial Councilor for a fee scale or to apply for medical insurance. The Financial Councilor should be able to tell you if you are eligible for insurance.

Tell the doctor to be discreet about the birth control. There is a federal law called HIPAA it protects the patient rights to privacy.

A fee scale is a reduction in the clinic charge based on your income.

I'm sure that you can find Women Clinics around where you live. You said that you can't remember the last time you went to the doctor...well as a smart female, you should be going every year for a pap exam, especially that you want to go on birth control pills. Look into free clinics in your area also.

you could do a search for a local free medical clinic, but the lines are long and you will have to wait. Otherwise, depending on your location, you will spend 80-100 on your visit with no insurance and then the cost of your bc. You must go to the doctor to get them though. Just choose one or see one your friends/ family uses. good luck!!

There should be a county clinic. Or a minor emergency center. Your college may have its own student clinic.

Failing that, look in the yellow pages for "Planned Parenthood". Call them and ask for a referral to a doctor that can prescribe for you.

Go to your county health department, they should be able to help, and is free for those who cannot afford a doctor visit.
