It's about 30 miles or so from Boston. Since it would be a reverse commute, I say it's about 45 minutes each way. But night life in suburbia? single people? I can't think of any that fit the bill. I think your best bet is to find a place halfway between Chelmsford and Boston, and come into the city for nightlife and to meet people. Given that you didn't mention if you're buying or renting or what your price range is, it's impossible to recommend a specific town. Or if you can afford Boston's very high real estate market, live in the city, where you'll have alot more fun and meet many more people. Since most of the heavy traffic travels in the opposite direction, it's quite feasible, although parking overnight in the city can be a nightmare. Good luck!

Depends on far your willing to drive. I work in Billerica, town next to Chelmsford. But I live on the NH seacoast close to Portsmouth. My commute is approximately 50 miles one way, takes about an hour depending on traffic.
Lowell wouldn't be a bad place to be for a single person. Close to Chelmsford, Umass Lowell is there, so there are younger folks around. Lowell also has a large ethnic population, mostly SE Asian. So there are some excellent Asian restaurants and grocery stores. Lowell also has some tough neighborhoods, so be careful.
Depending on what your into, Lowell as a few minor league sports franchises (Lowell Spinners are a farm team for the Red Sox).
Chelmsford and other surrounding towns are more your typical quiet suburban places. The yuppie place to live is Westford.
You could live in Boston and commute to Chelmsford, I know people who do that. The good thing about it is that your going the opposite direction of the commute for the most part. Most people are going in to Boston in the AM, leaving in the PM.
Somerville or Cambridge would be happening places on the north side of Boston that you could consider too. Live around Davis Square area would be good.

As another Answerer states there is not much nightlife in most Boston suburbs.
However, Chelmsford is right next to Lowell, an older city that has recently been rejeuvenated by a city policy to attract artists. The downtown is now full of lofts and restaurants and clubs. The city also benefits from having a branch of the state university and a national park. There is direct train service to Boston.

The best thing I could think of is live in Chelmsford itself and go to Lowell, MA for nightlife. It has a great downtown area and is a college town (UMASS Lowell) so there is a plenty going on. I used to live in Dracut, MA (on the other side of Lowell) and went into Lowell for shopping/bars/dating/etc. Boston is about a 30-45 min drive depending on traffic. It really is more affordable up that way too... I had a 2 bdrm condo there about 2 years ago that was in the low $100's... if that condo was any closer to Boston, the price would have been double.... even tripled closer to the city.

You do have some good suggestions here but I suggest you live in Nashua, NH which is about 22 miles from Chelmsford and there is a highway the full distance...
Nashua is close to Lowell also but Nashua itself is a medium size city with a lot to offer...especially less politics and congestion as does Massachusetts...and lower taxes also...
NH has an unlimited variety of entertainment year round and very little congestion to tolerate attending it. NH also is a mountain state with many anemities and potential...its beauty is unsurpassed...!
Research it and learn the demographics...it's free thru a Google search...

you could, for example, look at a map. i hear they even put those on the internet now! CRAZY!!!
seriously though, chelmsford isn't very close to boston. i think its like 45 minutes north west? i dont' know off the top of my head, but i'm also not the one considering moving there and asking a message board rather than researching, so i don't really need to know do i?
