Preferably artists that had notable careers prior to collaborating. I would not consider McCartney/Lennon, or Jagger/Richards as candidates.

David Bowie and Brian Eno on the Berlin Trilogy: much underrated, but Eno helped Bowie break out of the glam rock mode and into experimental music.

Bowie also has collaborated with Mick Jagger for a cover of "Dancing in the Street," but I thought it was self-indulgent, two superstars cavorting on stage. Martha and the Vandellas sang it like they meant it.

F*** man , I'm sooo drunk, but on the Zappa/Beefheart front it has to be "Bongo Fury"...or maybe "Trout Mask Replica"(in the sense that Zappa produced it). In fact, the latter is definitely the best... "Ella Guru"...oooohhhh
Edit:Okay, I've sobered up (5am here), but I'm gonna stick with my answer

Strummer and Jones.

You know, Beefheart STILL resents Zappa for stealing his ideas. I don't know if that's true or not, but the influence is pretty obvious.
