I think your first question, why we are there, is sort of irrelevant. Consider that the people who led us into the war did so with enough incompetence or willful ignorance that they have no credibility. We broke international law by attacking a country that did not threaten us. Bush broke domestic law by signing that Iraq was somehow involved with 9-11 in the legislation that authorized the war. He would later break other laws, such as the Geneva conventions, laws on surveillance, laws covering the conditions of prisoners, laws covering the responsibility of an occupying power and so on down the line.
As to what we are doing there, we are currently arming several different sides in a civil war. This includes Al Queda in Lebanon, The government of Turkey, the enemies of Al Queda in Iraq, the enemies of Turkey in Kurdistan, the Sunnis and Shea in Iraq, and various factions.
The one common denominator to all the groups is that nearly all of the hate the US and want them to leave.

We are in Iraq because after we removed Saddam Hussein from power we are pretty much obligated to restore some form of order to the nation. It's not fair to the people of Iraq that they should be left to be taken over by the next war tribe that wants to rule them like the Taliban.
It would also not do us any good to let them become a country that promotes terrorism against the US.
We are trying to stabilize the nation and secure the nation so the people of Iraq can live in a democracy where all ethnicities can take part in the governing process and have their share of power.
It's an unpopular idea with people who do not value their own freedoms enough to want poor people from the middle east to have them also.

This is how I understand it. George W. Bush(US Pres), Tony Blair(UK Prime Minister), and José María Aznar (Prime Minister of Spain) all believe/d that Iraq was producing weapons of mass destruction which Bush felt posed a threat to the U.S. and it's allies. The U.S. and some allies invaded Iraq to try to stop the production of these weapons. No weapons were actually found, so they went on a search for Saddam Hussein, caught him, and are now trying to help Iraq rebuild it's government.

For strategic placement of U.S. military in the Middle East. For the protection of perceived Middle Eastern interests. These interests include Israel and oil. It is not a war but an oocupation. And we will remain there for a very long time.

The official reason for the invasion was the claim, now proven unfounded, that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, which constituted a threat to world peace. U.S. President George W. Bush stated that the objective of the invasion was "to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people."

1. The world is reaching peak oil. After that oil production will decline and the price of oil will climb dramatically for those nations who do not have a good home supply. Presently there is no surplus of oil. Every barrel dropped out of the ground is burned.
Oil is used to grow food (pesticide and fertilizer) transport food (diesel fuel) and to remove the trash. It takes about a barrel of oil to make a computer, and most pharmaceutical medicines, not to mention plastics, rubber, synthetic vitamins, etc etc etc.
We in Americal live in an oil world and the democrats in congress will not allow America to drill for new sources of oil because the spotted owl might have to move.
2. War between arab nations which have control of oil could cause instability in the oil supply and plunge America, and many other nations, into a severe depression, where power blackouts, gasoline rationing, and massive layoffs would be common.
3. America is in Iraq to preserve stability among the arab nations and stabilize the world supply of oil and to prevent chaos and a new dark age from descending on all of us.

We are the plebians of the modern age. We are never told the "secrets" of the higher authorities. Well, I think it's the peoples' fault for trusting our political leaders. These leaders are just trying to solve their own personal problems. The ultimate reason for taking Iraq was for oil. I am quite confident that there are other reasons. God knows best, let's ask Him for guidance through these troubling times.

Saddam supported terrorists. Saddam could not or would not account for the WMD that he once had. Saddam was a threat to the region. Those are facts. Look them up and learn a little.
I did not indicate in my answer that Saddam and Al Quaida were in bed together. I just indicated terrorists. It is not hard to look up the connections. I will leave that to you so you can make a decision based on your own research.

Because the President, with the support of Democrats and Republicans, decided to take action after listening to the U.N. Debating Club for a number of years while they accomplished nothing.
We shouldn't be the world's police force and we shouldn't belong to the U.N.
