Nostradamus was a doctor/magus/scientist at a time when science and what we call magic had not separated into two different realms.

He experimented with a great many plants, some of which may have been hallucinogenic.

Fearing the authorities, he wrote his predictions in a dialect version of medieval French. The predictions are allegorical--which means they are open to interpretation.

Because his predictions are allegorical, and because there are reasons to question his mental state, I do not put much faith in anything he had to say.

Not much. It's the same principle as modern horoscopes -- his predictions are so broad and open to interpretation that they can mean anything. At first glance a well-known historical event might come to mind, but you can make almost any vague statement and find a situation in the past to fit it.

Those predictions were written for the people of his time. He was anticipating events in the 16th century, and to make people take him seriously he needed some serious mumbo jumbo, cryptic, able to be interpreted any way one wanted, to have the princes take him seriously and pay him well.

No, I don't think they're real (at least not as a tool for predicting anything). I think people have put them up on the wall and drawn the target AROUND them, making them fit their interpretations.
