As Lion noted, this previous week the first round of the Asian preliminaries concluded. The first round was a head-to-head, home-and away match between two teams.
In the first round, the top five teams in Asia were given a bye to the third round and two "pots" of teams were established for the first round draw. The nineteen highest ranked of the remaining teams (teams 6 through 24 in Asia) were placed in one pot and the bottom nineteen teams in Asia (teams 25 through 43) were placed in the other pot. To establish the matches one team was drawn from each pot.
For the first round, India was matched with Lebanon. The first game of the match was played in mid-October and was won by Lebanon. The second game was played this past Tuesday (the 30th) in India. That game ended in a tie. As a result, Lebanon advanced and India was eliminated from the 2010 World Cup.

Football is slowly growing in India.....
Cricket is still their prime sport and it will take time for the sport to be just as popular.
Almost any FIFA Sanctioned country can make it to the world cup....But you need to get through Qualification process in your continent, which is not an easy task for a country whose primary sport is not Football.
Maybe one day down the road...Once you see people within your own country wanting to play football rather than Cricket...... then perhaps your chances become brighter.

india more towards kricket and believe soccer have little interest in their community. nevertheless, from more than a billion of people living in india, i don't think it's impossible to find 11 men of good potential player to play in the world stage. hopefully, the government and the people can give their support, then a dream will come true.

they can sure kick ace at cricket, and with a billion people, you'd think it wouldn't be very hard to find 11 good soccer players... but until more emphasis is put on the beautiful game, they will not be able to advance to the world cup...

i think its quite impossible, unless FIFA change its plans on the number of teams to qualify from asia or the total number of teams in the world.
there are a lot of better teams in asia, and i think they deserve a chance first.
