It is a gas which traps heat in the atmosphere by allowing light and IR energy through but reflects the longer heat radiation trying to escape. The effect is like a greenhouse which admits light & IR easily, but is less efficient in losing heat. CO2 is considered the primary greenhouse gas of current concern.
