When I was a teen, I LOVED the book THE WATER IS WIDE by Pat Conroy. Actually, I still love it and think it is quite wonderful (and very, very funny) and I am so no longer a teen.
I should know more to recommend, but that is the only one that comes to mind right now. I'll get back to you if another fabulous idea pops in.

The Mother Tongue, by Bill Bryson. It's about all the craziness of the English language and how it got that way. A very fun read.
For a really happy book, try Happier by Tal Ben-Shaher. It's all about scientific research about happiness.

You should read Bringing Down the House. I can't remember the author, but it is a true story of a team of card players from MIT who took Vegas by storm and won tons of money using their inventive card-counting system. I couldn't put it down! If that doesn't tempt you, read A Civil Action by Jan Schlictman. A trues story of a huge law suit over chemical pollution in Woburn, MA. Sounds dull, but reads like a suspense novel.

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
It's very funny, sort of dark humor in parts, but quite comic.
