Spies, thieves and assassins. Not only did they fight the samurai, quite often it was at the behest of a rival samurai clan. Politics was a killer back then. Like today, men of power were willing to do anything to maintain their station and satisfy their agendas. For a more permanent solution to any problem Ninjas were Ideal. Wars were expensive and time consuming. Assassinations weren't.

Ancient ninjutsu schools never existed in ancient Japan. There is absolutely no scholarly evidence to support the existence of ninja in the fashion which viewed today. Assassins were in use, just as any other society. There were however no villages propagating secret skills through generations of assassins. There were no religious sects based off assassination. Assassins were, like in many cultures, either those contracted from the poor or criminal ranks in society. Or at later stages, part of a government trained group of operatives. Ninja, as popularly believed, are a myth.

Ninjas were mercenaries and assassins. They were highly secretive clans that looked out for only themselves. They were widely feared by the average person. They would fight samurai on occasion if it became necessary to completel a mission, but they generally did not call attention to themselves. The were not robin hood types, in fact they would likely have been hired to kill robin hood types.

It has long been my understanding that Ninja were more hired assasins than Robin Hood types.

They were thieves and assassins and considered the scum of the earth and totally without honour by the rest of the society. That didn't stop some from using their service of course.
