I am soon auditioning for a musical. I need to sing any song from any musical. It should be happy and somewhat upbeat. Which song would you reccomend? Also, I will be auditioning in front of everyone else who is auditioning and all of their parents, etc, so how can I get over my nervousness about this??

It's best to post what show and role you are auditioning for and what your vocal range is. It's very hard to make suggestions without knowing that. Generally you choose a song you already know well that can show off your vocal range and show that you can sing the vocal range of the character you want. It should also show similar character traits for the character that you are auditioning for.

The best way to get over nerves is to be as prepared as you can be. Practice, practice, practice.

good luck,
Marianne

Just remember that no one is going to be absolutely perfect. They are all in the same boat as you, they are all nervous. Now in choosing your song try to keep in mind what you already know. Singing songs you already are familiar with for an audition is a lot less hassle to prepare for. I do have some recommendations if you would like to check them out.

I Could of Danced All Night~ My Fair Lady

Honey Bun~ South Pacific

Lovely Night~ Cinderella

Wouldn't it be Loverly~ My Fair Lady

I Enjoy Being a Girl~ Flower Drum Song

keep in mind that some good audition songs like anything from disney or Wicked, or any really popular musical might not be the best choice because every one else will be thinking about those. Try to be unique and think outside the box.

Typically I go in an audition with a ballad and a fast song. I have sung the following:

Ballad - "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" from Showboat
Fast - "Corne of the Sky" from Pippen
"There's No Business Like Show Business" from Annie Get Your Gun

I am auditioning for Beauty and the Beast and was contemplating singing the song Mrs. Pots sings; however, sometimes it is not good to sing something from the musical you are auditioning for. However, you might want to have one prepared from the musical in case they come back at the second audition or ask you to sing something from the musical. Good luck, or as we say in the teater...break a leg!

Well, it depends on your vocal range. If you have a higher voice, a good song would be "How Lovely to be a Woman" from Bye-Bye Birdie, If you have a Middle range voice "Don't Rain on my Parade" or "I'd Rather be Blue" both from Funny Girl. Both of the second songs are low enough that they can be sung by a Saprano, Alto, and female Tenor... all three are upbeat and fun... Good luck, and Have fun! Thats what it is all about.
