I mean, I heard a boy talking about his dad, and his other day... neither of them were a step-dad to him. And they were a family of five; two fathers, two sons and a daughter.

I don't understand how gays and lesbians can have children and the children would belong to both parents equally - with no step-parent.

There are different ways of having children. Adoption in many states -- including my own NY. Surrogacy, which we are considering now (I've raised two adopted boys from their early teens up); and even trades with lesbian couples -- you give them genetically positive sperm and they give you one of the children. In some parts of Europe, even natural carrying using a surgical emplacement on the (I believe, although this is NOT my area of expertise) chest lining is possible for males.

Lesbian couples don't need to make agreements of course, they can just get a sperm donor.

Ideally (only legal in some states in the US), the non-biological parent, with either female/female or male/male couples, then adopts the child - so both have parental rights.

Kind thoughts,

Reyn

Lesbians can become pregnant and have their own biological children though artificial insemination; then if the biological father agrees to give up his parental rights to the child, the non-biological lesbian parent (the partner of the biological mom) can adopt the child legally. Its called a "second parent adoption", and once its finalized, the non-biological mom has all of the legal rights of any parent.

Gay men can have biological children using donated eggs, in vitro fertilization and a surrogate mother to carry the baby to term. Or artificial insemination into a woman willing to carry the baby and give up her parental rights once the baby is born. Then the non-biological father can likewise apply for a "second parent adoption".

Of course, gay and lesbian couples can also adopt children in most states.

Surrogacy and adoption. Or if I had a child with a woman, and she died, then my partner could adopt the child. Woman can also be inseminated by other means than sex. Donors? There are a lot of ways gays and lesbians can have kids.

My partner and I are starting to work on adoption right now. We live in Utah, so it's a lot harder, but most states will recognize 2 male, or 2 female adoptive parents.

There are many ways. You can be married to someone of the opposite sex and have a child the old fashioned way, divorce and the same-sex partner can adopt.Or It could be artificial insemination as well. Or even simple adoption. It could also be that someone was an egg donor, or a surrogate mom or dad.

They adopt, but that always confused me would it be like dad1 or dad2, or would they both answer when the kids talk to them.

But with Males, they usually adopt, or have like a (don't know the word for a woman who they give the sperm to and they have their baby for them)

With women they would either adopt or make a trip to the sperm bank
