I would say the second... The demand for PEACE is a demand for an effect, a valid demand is for a cause and the cause of peace is Justice. Justice can only be achieved by rational men...

I'm going to rely on IR theory & some sociology. There is no such thing as an absence of violence since humans will always create conflict. Its inevitable.
Civil society usually evolves to minimize violence and create better arenas to deliberate conflicts. Still, rational (rational as IR defines it, not as it is conventionally known) men & women would be the ones keeping violence in check because its in everyone's best interest.

Peace is the absence of violence. It is when nobody in the world feels the need to have power over one another, because power tied in with hatred is the root of all violence. Peace can be obtained when we finally understand that we are all equal, and that money and power are not worth fighting for. I am fifteen and feel that way, and want to end irrational thinking that teenagers are selfish, caring only about themselves and do not care about education. Education could save our world and end prejudice.

In my own personal view i definitely say that peace is indeed the absence or cessation of war but not violence. Violence is very much different from war. Athough war is a form of violence but it will not totally answer your question since the word you used is violence. Violence is fierceness, eagerness and outrage. A person or group of persons may air their fierceness but not totally erase peace.
Thanks for asking and have a great day!

No, peace is not the absence of violence. People are in constant psychological and emotional wars. There is no violence within these wars - but they disrupt peace nonetheless.

"There is no single, simple key to this peace--no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers. Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process--a way of solving problems." - JFK
I guess the answer is "yes" it's both. :-)
Peace to you.

Peace is a state of mind that is not dependent on anything external for it's existence.

It would be easier to simply say...."I beg to you to agree to disagree with you" rather than fight a war. But that's not how it is. Kinda like our "POLICE ACTION" in Iraq. They have fought over there for the last 2000 yrs. We the U.S. will never make one ounce of difference unless we drop the big one. I'm personally still waiting for the shock and Awhh.
It is better to talk and agree to disagree than to fight period.
We are loosing our families and loved ones for a useless cause, May God almighty be with our troops.
