I think it is one of 2 things.
1. It is infected. In this case you should go to the doc immediately.
2. The knife hit and injured a nerve. There are a whole lot of them in that area, and if one is damaged, it can cause pain all the way down the finger or even hand and arm.
Either way, go to the doctor.

The burning sensation was most likely caused from food on the knife or the dish soap you were using. I doubt that you cut deep enough to damage a tendon or even reach a bone. Since your cut is, unfortunately, in a sensative place that is used costantly it will be sore for a few days. Make sure that you clean it out really well and wrap it up to prevent infection and the pain should go away.

RE:
Stabbed myself in the thumb accidentally, weird pain with it?
I was dishwashing at home and a knife i was washing slipped out of my hand as i went to catch it the blade landed pointing straight down into my thumb. It didn't go deep and didn't bleed much either. I've stabbed or cut or slashed myself accidentally a lot, and the weird thing about...

I guess that the bone went into your hand and it disrupted the hyper-extended tendon in the left portion of your hand. The knife, probably not being sharpened lately, couldn't have gone that deep and probably just scratched the tendon. Of course, the tendon could be critically damaged and you could lose all control/feeling in your hand so I would see a doctor
Just to let u kno i made that all up

It's quite normal. You may feel different because it's a different cut, and this time it's on your thumb... right in the middle. But just to be sure, go to a doctor to have it checked out. A bit of an advice, though. Next time something like that falls, DON'T CATCH IT. It's not gonna hurt if it falls, unless there are children around. YOU'RE the one who may hurt if you catch it. Also, was there any soap on it?

Personally, I would just put some antibiotic ointment on it, bandage it up and take one of the three major pain relieving drugs available over the counter; asprin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen... I can't think of much else to help, except to try to not scratch it when it starts itching during the healing process

even you said that the cut wasnt deep, meaning that you didnt cut the bone or cut the tendon or muscle or whatever else is in there. this just means that you have cut one that scab folds over it'll feel a lot better

could be the laceration of the 2 tissues rubbing together when moved. the tendon is on the outside...the nerves are in the palm side. If there's any numbness at the tip, you have dammaged your nerve.

Maybe you cut some muscle. I have heard that that kind of pain happens. Because when you cut muscle, it like, expands, causing your thumb to loose volume, making it feel like what you explained. good luck an im sorry about your thumb. feel better! =)

Maybe just infected or some dish soap went in and made it burn a little. Depending on what kind of ingredients the dish soap has.
