I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and want to see if this is possible to do: I want to weld in a Y-pipe right before the cat, and have one pipe lead into the normal exhaust (cat, muffler, etc.), and then the other end of the Y to just be open. Also, I'd want to put a plate in the Y-pipe to make it switchable between the normal exhaust and free flow (to pass inspection). Is this somewhat common? Also, does it burn up the valves at all because there isn't as much pipe between them and open air?

Any comments are gladly accepted!

No, it is not a common exhaust modification and it probably would not pass safety/emissions inspection if your state has these inspections. I doubt if it would affect the valves, I've never had any valve problems using headers on my drag cars.

It's possible but I don't see what you're trying to accomplish.
