I believe that licensure is necessary to bill the state for caring for a disabled person. I'm assuming that he is on Medicaid - his case worker should be able to tell you how to become licensed.

In California, it's called In Home Supportive Services, commonly referred to as IHSS. To qualify, your boyfriend needs to be enrolled in Medi-Cal.

To apply, have your boyfriend contact the social service/welfare/human services office in the county where he lives. A social worker will conduct a needs assessment and authorize a certain number of hours per week for which a caretaker can provide support service and get paid.

No, you don't need any specialized training.

Don't contact an attorney. That's a waste of time and money. Just call the social services office, and ask for information concerning IHSS.

The above information concerns California, but other states have similar programs with similar rules and regulations.

Yes, you can get paid for that. BUT, you will have to comply with some very strict state statutes in order to get paid for it. In many cases, you must be employed through a separate agency that evaluates your services regularly. Go see an attorney to find out what you need to do in order to get paid. (You might have to take a few training courses as well!) Only an attorney that is licensed to practice in your state can advise you, legally, on these matters.
