I know this one girl that tells me my younger sister is more "sophisticated" then me, she keeps saying it over and over too! I get kind of offended when she says that, but I could be an over reactive-nitpicky person. Do you think its an insult for someone to say that to your face?

That is very mean, but you have to tell her something so she'll shut up because if not that chick is going to keep on ranting. Confront her and be like "what to you is the definition of sophisticated, and what gives you the right to judge whats sophisticated or not." I bet that will shut her up. She sounds very rude, and doesn't have anything else to say.

it probably could be considered rude or on the other-hand you have to consider the source. Most people will not insult you directly, it invites conflict. Ask this girl to be more specific, she didn't say that your sister is prettier just more sophisticated....what does that really mean? It's possible that she doesn't mean anything by it.

I can see why you would think it is an insult. Personally, I think that telling someone straight out that their sister is more sophisticated is kind of rude. Your friend might not necessarily mean it as, "You aren't as pretty as your sister." Maybe she thinks your sister is just more into fashion than you are.

That's one possible interpretation, of course it all depends on what she means by "sophisticated". She could also be setting your sister up for some b u l l s h i t so it's worth being somewhat cautious and skeptical until you get credible answers. See what you can find out, and if necessary, protect your sister.

I think that it is a compliment to you and an insult (possibly) to your sister.

2. sophisticated.
–verb (used with object)
3. to make less natural, simple, or ingenuous; make worldly-wise.
4. to alter; pervert: to sophisticate a meaning beyond recognition.

Most of the definitions of sophisticate are not very positive.

I think its rude and would be offended by her saying it over and over. she's basically saying you don't know how to dress
