If there isnt a scratch on the record, it could be that the stylus/cartridge isnt weighted enough or the needle is dull. Another thing that can cause problems is "acoustic distortion." If you play your records very loud, the vibration from the speakers can cause the record to skip. This is usually controlled by "shock absorbers" in the base of the more expensive turntables.

Try cleaning it with vinyl record cleaner and a soft, clean cloth. If it still skips, the record may be either warped or damaged and the skip is probably permanent.

Set a penny on the top of the needle. If it doesn't stay, use scotch tape.
