Sorry for the less-than-intelligent question. I just wanted to draw attention. Tomorrow I'm competing in a speech [nfl] tournament, and I'm doing a dramatic interpretation piece. It's about a woman who was abused and controlled by her husband, and one night after he beat her up she shot him, went to jail, etc. Question is: Is this too predictable? Is it something that's been done too much, overdone, perhaps? I don't know, I'm getting quite a terrible bundle of nerves, and I just want to get some feedback and advice. Thanks SO MUCH to any/all answerers!

If it's the piece I am thinking of (name escapes me), possibly.
My advice is to pull back from the drama. Keep it restrained. Have her fight to keep in control instead of easily letting it out. This gives you a fresher take on the work.

Play it simple - almost matter of factly. Th womans in shock and has essentially had her life ruined. Think about people who are deeply depresses and on the verge of suicide. The ones that are crying and very emotional are those crying out for help. But those that are too far gone and know that hope is out of reach become almost at peace with the fact that there is no hope. Bring a quietness to the piec if you can.

too late to do anything but your best with what you have. It may be the best thing the judges ever heard. you have practiced it, been coached, I hope, and are ready to go, give it your best shot
