Watching tv is like a computer on a power saving mode/ hibernation mode for your brain.. especially if you just sit there and absorb the information without making any sense of it.
Watching tv is having everything handed to you on a platter - you get what you get .. so where is the effort in that?
In MOST occassions watching tv does not stimulate the brain as the sounds are supplied, the colours, the images, and even the emotion as well. It is not in the least interactive as you just sit and take information.
One of the great comparisons used against the tv would be reading a book where it greatly relies on your imagination. it's your world.
Another better alternative to tv used would be some family time or at least some human to human interaction, because lest we forget the tv is actually a machine... and we are social creatures.. the tv is not just detrimental to our imagination but also to the nature of our specie.

For young children it doesn't necessarily destroy it but promotes it. For some unknown reason children have no problems believing in the unknown or some type of magic. But if you are staring at the tv all day then your not using much of any type of imagination, you are watching someone else's at work.
The surgeon general (the warning on cigarettes and stuff) did a study and found that aggressive tv and video games does promote violence, and does make any individual slightly more aggressive than they would have been if they had not seen/played whatever it was. It's not an excuse, but it is a warning as to what you watch.
Its all about how much you watch and what you watch.

I dont think I really believe that TV destroys imagination. TV allows people to experience things they wouldn't be able to experience otherwise. Many people, including myself would have never imagined or envisioned something if they didn't see something like it on TV or the internet. Saying that TV is destroying imagination is a little far fetched. If anything I think it is helping expand it.

Even with a vivid imagination you can't dream up the special effects you see on screen. You give up trying to think about the plot and simply watch as you are amazed over and over until your senses are dull.
Go watch "Psycho" again and pay attention to the shower scene where the lady is attacked. It is one of the most shocking scenes ever made. But you know what? If you watch it, you never see a knife touch the lady. Not once! Why is it so shocking? Your mind is imagining the knife.
Today, people would see the knife, the blood, the screaming, the twisting, sounds of the knife cutting into vegetables..... etc.
So, they show you too much and you quit using your mind.
g-day!

TV only destroys imagination if you watch it too much and don't try to process or think about what you see & hear.
Sitting passively hour after hour, night after night is not good for anyone's mind, body or soul.
People should actively engage with what they watch and refuse to watch trashy programmes.
Far too many people uncritically watch hours of rubbish instead of doing more constructive things with their lives

Basically because you are receiving information from the tv when you are watching tv - receiving and not creating. In other words you are taking in (receiving) and not creating (sending out). So, doing this for long periods of time every day and not taking that information that you are receiving and doing some creating of your own, it is only natural for your mind and body to lessen its creativity, since both consciously and subconsiously you sense that someone else is "doing everything for you", so you don't have to.

Whenever you watch tv your mind will completely be dependent on what you see and hear so your brain will not have to "imagine"
On other cases TV can influence your imagination

It doesn't..... But what you watch can keep you from physical exercise. What educators and parents are saying is what is said about all of today's technology. It decreases our need to use our brain. But I disagree. To see the Backyardigans.... A group of animals that talk and live in a neighborhood. They use their imaginations to take them on adventures in their backyard. I love that show.... it starts with the scene of the backyard and as the animal is walking the scene becomes whatever he /she has imagined. The shows of today actually help us to use our imaginations. Sabrina the teenage witch... Charmed..... the Disney Channel in and of itself is the fantasy land of imagination. I hate Sponge Bob.... but he only live through my imagination.

If all you watch is fantasy types of programming, it numbs you to reality, like a drug. There are, however, some programs on TV that stimulate your mind. Educational and documentary shows that I find boost the imaginative mind.

shhhhhh - wait till the commercial and I'll forget by then
that's why it's called the idiot box -
all we have to do is sit and absorb
no creative thought - no interaction
our tv broke for 2 weeks - and we actually became a family
again - played scrabble and other board games -
ate at the dinner table together
why did we get the TV fixed????
