Today, I was talking to a guy named Frankie. One thing he said I found quite odd. I happen to wear a lot of black and I like it very much. He said that anyone who likes black and wears a lot of black is "emo". How can people stereotype someone like this? So no matter who I am, if I like black and wear a lot of it, I am emo. Why do people stereotype others like this?

Most people don't take the time to find out who the real person is. Sadly. People judge others everyday and more times than not, people are misjudged. It's society and it's downfall.
Once a long time ago, I received a very good lesson RE: stereo-types. There was an old dude who wore raggedy clothes that used to walk by my office. I thought he was a "troll" for lack of a better description. He came in one day and asked me about some business. I thought he was in there to harasse people or beg for money. As much as I wanted to throw him out, I thought I'd entertain both of us for a moment. It turned out, that he was my BEST customer! The reason he was all dirty and wore ragged clothes was because he was a gold miner! He worked his mine and was actually quite wealthy. Not only that, he was quite intelligent and witty as well as charming. It was my best lesson in Never Judge a Book by It's Cover. It was a lesson in humility that I will always carry with me. Treat everyone as an equal, and treat everyone with respect until such a time as they prove otherwise.

Wearing black does not make you emo, but the emo culture incorporates a lot of black clothing, so I see why he would say something like that.

When in college I wore long hair, torn jeans and flip-flops (even in the snow), t-shirts with alcohol or sexual statements on them and an occasional bandanna around my forehead. People formed their opinions about me based on that..... and people always will. I came to understand and accept it. For those of us who chose to look a certain way - we need to accept the looks we get.
