okay, so this guy I know on facebook sent me this email asking about what movies I like and then it somehow turned into talking about british movies and then he wrote this:

"How do you feel about British accents ?I´ve been told British accents go down very well in the USA.
I study English in my town - my teacher is a woman of British descent and she places special emphasis on my accent- which leans towards American English (because of the movies, I guess) Besides, I tend to use American words rather than British, -eg , diaper or sidewalk instead of nappy or pavement.
Anyway, I have an English friend who says i sound Irish (!)"

what would you reply to that?? especially the "How do you feel about British accents? I´ve been told British accents go down very well in the USA." part...I don't really know how to answer that :P

please no rude replies/comments

Perhaps you can ask him how an American accent goes down in Great Britian. How do you personally feel about someone with a british accent? Don't forget...just like the USA, where we have many different accents (ie southern, new england, midwest, etc) so does Great Britian. For instance, a person from London does not sound like a person from Liverpool, nor does that person sound like a person from the Midlands. How can you tell if you like or dislike an accent? Most of the time it's really all about the person doing the speaking rather than the accent itself.

Well, how do you feel about accents first?
I cant answer the question for you but I will tell you what I would say...

"Yeah I like British accents. I actually like all accents, I really like the fact that we are all people but we all speak different languages and in different dialects and accents. In American I think we are really fond of all accents, foreign or even our own. As you travel through America, depending on what state or city you live in your accent or what and how you say it is different... We dont notice it that much in ourselves and thats why people are fond of hearing other peoples. So your right, Americans do like British accents, or any for that matter."

I dont know, something like that. Hope that helps.

Well, is that person british? Maybe you should say: "I like british accents. They are cool and sound cool. And i have heard they do go down well in the USA. British movies are cool."

Thats what I would say!

He is asking if you prefer English accents to American accents. I think he is hoping you'll prefer the English accent. You should answer him honestly, of course.

Seems to me that he possibly has a British accent! Try to take that into account in your reply, but also don't lie and tell him you love it when it makes you sick. A simple "I certainly don't mind them" wouldn't hurt.
