Marcellus:
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
This is one time when the popular misquotation—"Something's rotten in Denmark"—is a real improvement on the original. But you ought to be careful around purists, who will also remember that the minor character Marcellus, and not Hamlet, is the one who coins the phrase. There's a reason he says "state of Denmark" rather than just Denmark: the fish is rotting from the head down—all is not well at the top of the political hierarchy.

A line from the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. An officer of the palace guard says this after the ghost of the dead king appears, walking over the palace walls.
“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark”
It is also used to describe corruption or a situation in which something is wrong.

I agree with above. It was "something is rotten in the state of Denmark". It's from "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. I don't know exactly who said this, but I think it was one the the guards.

From Shakespeare's Hamlet, 1603.
Marcellus says, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark".
After Hamlet is gone, Horatio and Marcellus seem to have very different attitudes about what to do next.
Marcellus says, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark", and he wants to follow Hamlet, presumably to protect him.
Horatio is more reluctant, and says, "Heaven will direct it", meaning that God will take care of whatever is wrong with Denmark.
But Marcellus goes, and Horatio follows.
