How would I figure out the theme?

I need to know the theme to "The Enchanted Doll" by Paul Gallico.
I'm stuck... and I don't get how you're supposed to figure it out.

The theme is that it's not the outer appearance of a person that matters, but who they are within.

The story is a variation of the "frog turns into a prince" fairy tale.
