I have seen people labeled as autistic or having Asperger's Syndrome that I would never have given that diagnosis to. I am fairly a strict diagnostician, but I always felt the main characteristic of people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder is their inability to be socially appropriate and see another person's perspective. They are not altruistic or consider other people's feelings. They don't laugh at jokes because they can only see thin gs or understand them concretely. They have a hard time with noise, but also integrating various stimuli, especially multi-modally. A person being taught a task with both verbal and visual information will use both to learn the problem and will learn it quicker than if only provided visual or verbal information. An person with autism will not learn it any faster with both forms of information at the same time than if only one was used. People with autism may often look like they have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder because they have difficulty initiating an action or, once started, stopping it; they repeat it over and over several times or more. These are many of the main characteristics. Only you can judge concerning your friend, or better a doctor.

Autism is when someone is incapable of any emotion and are also very talented at remembering things. I recently read the book 'Millions' and one of the main characters was autistic and it portrayed how he took everything logically and literally. The character usually mentioned facts and knowledgable pieces of information when he was having a conversation. Usually people with autism have a particular subject which they know all about and usually talk about all the time. They will pursue in finding about more about these subjects, also.

Screaming has nothing to do with autism at all.

The not being able to focus sounds like add/adhd, the screaming that does sound like something a person with severe autism or other mental disabilities would do when they are fustrated and do not have the verbal skills. Some people with autism have add/adhd.

I can't stand lots of noise, but I don't scream. I go silent and draw up into myself, if that makes sense. He doesn't sound autistic.... Bikini Chick is wrong in saying we're incapable of emotion. Emotion is difficult for us to process or understand without other logical input and output; it also is difficult to pay attention to it when we have to pay attention to other things. We have emotions. We're not unintelligent, unfeeling psychos.

Your screaming coworker sounds as if he has been unused to expressing his feelings appropriately, frustrated, and possibly unable to understand something. People with learning disorders do that sometimes. I sometimes did it whenever I was doing a subject that's very difficult for me at school. Your coworker needs to learn a better way to handle himself....
