Since they vary directly, set them up as a pair of ratios in the same direction:

42 .... x
---- = ---
7 ...... 8

Now cross multiply:
7x = 42 * 8

Divide both sides by 7:
x = 42 * 8 / 7
x = 6 * 8
x = 48

So the answer is x = 48

Notice how x is 6 times y in both ratios.

If x=42 and y=7, then y=x/6 or x=6y

So if y=8 then x=48

x/y = costant
x/8 = 42/7 = 6
Multiply both sides by 8,
x = 48
---------
Ideas: Direct variation means the ratio is a constant.
