Not greatest or most talented artist, singer, or writer.

If it could be groups or individuals, then I would rank Elvis and the Beatles in the top two. I would still rank Alabama, Huey Lewis and The News, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John, Ray Charles, George Strait, the Beach Boys, Hank Williams, the Eagles, Willie Nelson, Journey, Chicago, and Cher above Bob Dylan, but not necessarily in that order. I could go on because Bob Dylan would not even wind up in my top 30.

Elvis not only put out more hits than Bob Dylan, he had to do it against the grain using new styles and new things in music, in person, and in the recording studio and trying to do black songs in a segregated world. Also, I think the editors of Rolling Stone are too biased toward rock and roll. They may as well have called their list the best rock and roll artists and just left out the few token names they threw in there. There are lots of artists that put out more #1 hits in their genre with better overall singing, songwriting, and instruments than Bob Dylan.

Hahahahaha. That guy that reckons Huey Lewis & the News, Chicago. Journey, Cher and all them are better than Dylan cracks me up. Fair enough if he just prefers their music, he's entitled to his own taste, but come on, saying Cher is better than Dylan is like saying Britney Spears is better than the Rolling Stones.
Anyway, i think he'd definitely be in the top 5. There was a certain amount of being in the right place at the right time, but then the same applies to all the greats, i.e. Beatles, Sex Pistols etc.

Music is very subjective. You can't really rank artists as a result. It's all a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like the Beatles music better than Dylan's. However, I think Dylan writes great stories.

Who reads Rolling Stone anymore these days. They've been considered passe since 1972. Comparing Bob Dylan and The Beatles is irrelative. It's apples and oranges.

my top songwriter / lyricists would be:

1/ Lennon/Mccartney
2/ Bob Dylan
3/Roger Waters (pref with dave Gilmour)
4/Neil Young
5/Paul Simon

Particularly lyrically, these guys are streets ahead. McCartney a little weaker lyrically but the best composer of melody ever.

Artists though different story.

1/Neil Young
2/ Roger Waters
3/Paul McCartney
4/John Lennon
5/David Bowie

(sorry Bob- loved your concert 2 months ago though)

No. He wasn't the greatest. I don't think he compares with some other more talented artists. What was so 'grwat' about him was the revolutionary following he had, and the people who insisted he was great. Now look at him.

I'm sorry to all the bob dylan fans out there but i just can't stand his music or his voice. I have friends that think he's great and i usually just leave the subject alone. it's kind of nice to be able to say it on here. I CAN"T STAND BOB DYLAN!!!

Song writer he surpasses them, as a performing artist he probably wouldn't rank amongst the best.

No

Dylan came along at a very "opportunistic" time.

He was a poet and a storyteller who fooled almost an entire generation.

He got lucky. He admitted this himself.
