You didn't say your replacing any fluid, so if it is low on fluid then; yes not putting antifreeze in will cause it to over heat.
You may have other issues, if it continually is getting low on fluid. Reg water will eventually rust parts and may clog your system, you will need to do some serious flushing to clear it. Get ready for hours of flushing repeatedly. ALSO; it can and will rust out Freeze plugs on your enging block, causing water to leak out. Anti Freeze should be mixed 50/50 with water. You can buy it already premixed, or concentrated and it tells you right on the jug how to mix it. 1 more thing could be a problem, check all your hoses to make sure they are not leaking or kinked any where.
Running an automobile without water can cause serious damage which could be very expensive!
Don't do it.

No, the motor *should not over heat with plain water in it however the antifreeze mixed 50/50 with distilled water helps the cooling system stay free of rust and corrosion inside the block, cylinder heads and radiator. It also lubricates the water pump. If you have any type of over heating problem have your cooling system pressure checked. It's a test to see how long the cooling system holds the pressure value stamped on the radiator cap. If it checks out OK It's time for a new radiator, especially if you've driven it with plain water in the cooling system. The coolant passages inside the radiator will rust and corrode in no time. If you can't swing a radiator have it granular acid and neutralizer flushed. Keep this in mind any radiator that's more than 15 yrs. old is pretty much used up.

Water actually transfers heat better than pure antifreeze does. So no.. just having water in the radiatior will not cause it to overheat. BUT. if the water gets to the boiling point at the pressure that is set by the system.. it will boil out and then the engine will overheat. The purpose of antifreeze is to lower the freezing point of the coolant and raise the boiling point along with other things like adding some lubrication to the waterpump and helping to prevent corrosion.

It wouldn't cause it to overheat immediately. However the antifreeze has lubricants and anti rust additives to keep your engine block, water pump and radiator in good shape. Over time, running just water, the engine will start to rust internally. The rust will clog up the rdiator and damage the water pump and thermostat. Pretty soon the entire cooling system will be a bloomin mess and your car will be seriously overheating and costing you big bucks. That's without even worrying about what a shot of freezing weather will do to it.

A vehicle's factory cooling system should be efficient enough to keep it between operating temperatures , if it does not there are problems in the cooling system.
anti-freeze helps to prevent the coolant icing up in cold conditions , and helps to prevent the chemicals in tap water eating the aliminium and other metals the cooling components are made of ( like aliminium heads and elbows )
anti-freeze has a high boiling point and low freezing point. ( compared to normal water).
So i think one could not say an engine would overheat without anti-freeze.

Anti freeze obviously keeps water from freezing but an antifreeze and water mixture will also help cool the engine better than just water. It transfers heat better.
Antifreeze also helps prevent corrosion.

That would be solid fact if operating under extreme conditions. Anti-freeze coolants spreads the molecular structure of water allowing increased heat carrying capacity thus more efficient heat exchange. It is away from good to run straight water.

I think anti freeze freezes at a lower temperature and therefore can help protect your block from cracking and it also
doesnt evaporate like water when its hot.

Anti-freeze is also called coolant. Yes, no anti-freeze will make your engine overheat.
