At the pound walk around get a background on the dog from the staff and find one that is good and well behaved...you will make the connection when you meet hi/her many breeds are indoor pets.

No pet is really cheap, cats and dogs are cheapest. Dogs need a place to run around unless you get a breed that is happy being sedentary, or a "toy" breed that can live inside comfortably and still have room to run in the house but they are expensive. If you can't let the dog run around enclosed outside, you need to take them for walks on a regular basis.

I think rabbit lifespan is several years but they are kind of fussy tempered.

Sugar gliders might be a good choice but I don't know how much they cost, or how long they live.

I would consider addopting a rabbit from a shelter so there already spayed/neutered then you can let youre rabbit live in the house without a cage or just a space to call his own but there not too cheap beacause you need to bunnyproof buy food hay and they need to go to a vet once ayear but they make great friends and theyll play with you and they can live to be 10 or more years

A tarantula only needs a small area (they have small plastic cages for them) and only needs to be fed once a week (crickets) and they're really cheap. And they will crawl all over you if you want them to. And they only bite if you scare them and they're not venomous. They're pretty tame and really cool. Especially if you like to watch bugs get killed. Oh yeah make sure to get a female, they live for years.

Tarantulas are way cheaper than cats and dogs. If you have to you can make a cage for them out of those giant pickle jars and catching crickets to feed them is free and of course water for them is free. You can even catch a tarantula depending on where you live so you don't have to buy one. Yet again....free. Way cheaper than catfood and litter (i love cats by the way, have three of them) shots, dogfood, and vet visits.

dwarf hamster or gerbil, I had dwarfs and they are such wonderful pets, get one young and it'll hang by you and run all over, you can buy a cage for cheap along with useing card board to shut off a space and allow it to run free in a small area with you. I loved mine the average life span of mine were 1.5 to 2.5 years, the ones I raised from babies did not bite.

Try looking for a small dog at your local animal shelter.
Also, a guinea pig would live a while.
Or a snake or a bearded dragon lizard.
(I know, ewww reptiles, but my beardy has a real personality!
He's like a little person!)

Well, you can look for free puppies in the classifieds...I found a free kitten in the classifieds. Snakes live really long, but they don't make very good friends. Ferrets can be sociable, but they have an attitude and are expensive. I don't know how long rats and gerbils live.....
