Can Braxton Hicks contractions take your breath away?

I've been having what I thought was braxton hicks for a couple of weeks now but this one was different. It lasted a little over a minute, hurt like a menstrual cramp type pain, and took my breath away at first for a few seconds (the others I've been having were nothing like that).

I'm only 23 1/2 weeks pregnant (2nd pregnancy) but was put on bed rest at around 28 weeks during my 1st pregnancy for the risk of preterm labor.

In case this helps...
During my first pregnancy I started to dilate at 28 weeks but stayed at the same point until right before they induced me @ 36 weeks (due to preeclampsia).

Braxton hicks can hurt as much as real labor pains, and yes they can take your breath away. You should still have it checked out with your risk of pre-term labor but the real way to tell is how consitent the contractions are. Braxton-Hicks vary a lot and come unpredictably where real contractions are almost always consistent in pain, and timing. Call your doc if it happens again and maybe get off your feet for a bit, rest and relax. If that doesn't help, go in just to be checked out to be safe.

Braxton hicks can hurt for some people... Some people feel them in their back only... others in their back and front.. and then still others just in their lower stomach. Difference is they wont come at regular intervals and wont become stronger like regular contractions.

Heres a timer next time you start to have a rash of braxton hicks or what seem like them and see if theres a pattern.. If so place a call to your doctor.

Braxton Hicks can hurt. They can take your breath away. The difference is is that they will go away if you lay on your side, or get up or sit down. They will not be regular.
Call your doctor or midwife or just go to the hospital if you are that worried. This is your baby, so plesae don't feel bad about going to extremes to make sure he or she is okay in there!

yes they can. when i was pregnant (high risk and on bed rest)
my braxton hicks got really painful and were about 1 to 3 min apart and lasted about 30 sec. to 1 min. they would come and go for hours sometimes even days but i would call the doc if i were you . you could never be too safe. better safe then sorry.
good luck

I've had braxton hicks that were very strong, and sort of took my breath away but they didn't feel like menstural cramps, they felt like braxton hicks. I'd get it checked out with your history or premature labor!!

I've never had braxton hicks that severe before (2 previous pregnancies). It could have actually been gas but that is the best case scenario. I would see my OB ASAP.
