As far as I can remember, it used to be a legal requirement for petrol stations to allow bona fide travellers use of toilet facilities...I had to stop at one today and ask to use the toilet, but I was refused access. They had no public facilities and would not let me use the staff one on Health and Safety grounds. Since I'd been driving quite a while and was in an area I was unfamiliar with, it left me in a very difficult situation. Fortunately I found a pub quite close by (and just in time!), but this was just luck. Surely this situation cannot be acceptable?
Does anyone know if I have grounds for complaint or am I just being fussy?

Motorway Service Areas have to provide toilets by law. Don't think anyone else has to, also, the Disability Discrimination Act means that disabled people must have access to toilets where provided so Service Stations, faced with a huge bill to upgrade would rather shut them altogether.

No you dont have any grounds for a complaint, as the facilties are private property.

The only way that these sort of places would have to ket you use the toilets, is that if you have a medical condition.

For example, people that havehad a colsotomy operation. They carry a card that state they may need to use toilet in an emergency.

A local supermarket is in dispute with the council because -
Public toilets built under the terms of the planning permission are kept locked by the store.
So it seems to be planning not law.

National, State & local laws differ. Depends upon the law in the jurisdiction in question.
