Niedermayer's retired (maybe) and Lidstrom (37) and Pronger (33) aren't going to be around forever -- who do you see taking the torch from them? A friend of mine assures me that Shea Weber is the next big thing, but I think (and cringe) that it's gotta be Phaneuf.

I think we go back to the 80s and have several different prominent defencemen win the award, without anybody stringing together an Orr or Lidstrom like streak.

- Keith Ballard
- Francois Beauchemin
- Kevin Bieksa
- Dan Boyle (beast in the east)
- Jay Bouwmeester
- Brian Campbell

- Dion Phaneuf
- Chris Phillips
- Brian Rafalski
- Wade Redden
- Lubomir Visnovsky
- Shea Weber
- Ryan Whitney

It would hard to pass on Phaneuf for sure. The kid has some serious jam. I honestly can't think of another young d-man that has Dion's potential.

Dion!
I wish Kornwall of Detroit could stay healthy...I think he'd be right up there. And here is Tollefsen in Columbus- this guy is tough! but he will never get noticed playing there.
