The five tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy--the Mohawk, Onondaga, the Oneida, the Seneca, and the Cayuga formed their confederacy to control the entire northeastern seaboard and within from other Indian Nations. Each of these Nations controlled one of the four directions with the Onondaga situated in the middle.
When the Tuscarora joined the Iroquois in the early 1700s they provided the southern protection.
