Who took prenatals BEFORE getting pregnant, and did taking prenatals in advance prove to be beneficial for your child?

I took them for three months before, but I had to stop taking them after I got pregnant because they made me sick. Never had a problem with them before I got pregnant. My doctor put me on Flinstone's with a separate folic acid supplement - a 1mg tablet by prescription. They were much easier on my stomach than any of the prenatals I tried to take, all of which would come up less than a half hour after I took them. In early pregnancy, the most important nutrient is folic acid. In later pregnancy, you need more iron.

Research has proven that women who take folic acid before becoming pregnant have lower occurrences of birth defects in their children, such as spina bifida. Plus, prenatal vitamins are really high in iron - good preparation for before you get pregnant, since your blood volume increases during pregnancy. Ironically, it's the iron in the vitamins that generally causes stomach upset. That's why lots of doctors either have queasy women switch to children's chewables or other prenatals that are specially formulated for women experiencing a lot of nausea. There's a little less iron in them, and they're easier on your stomach.

Good luck to you!

I have taken prenatal vitamins since i got prego with my 13 month old. I found a vitamin that i liked and continued!!! i am now 8 weeks prego with baby # 3 i dont know if there are any added benefits but right now it is saving me...i can keep no food down so the prenatals are giving me my nutrients that food is not. and to the person that said her kids are fine and she didnt take any...that is just like the lucky babies of smokers who have nothing wrong with them...but these are our babies...better safe then sorry. I would much rather take a pill and give my child a great start on life. Good luck.

One of the benefits of taking prenatals before when planning a pregnancy is to make sure you're getting enough folic acid. It's a substance adults can be lacking in, and it helps with correct growth and formation of the fetus in-utero. Best of luck!

I didn;t take them before, nor during or after. My children are perfectly normal-well as normal as anyone is. Food works better and your body absorbs ALL of the vitamins from that. Prenatals became necessary when our world became too fast-paced for proper nutrition. I'm not tellgin you NOT to take them, far from it. I just mean kids will eb normal or abnormal whether you get real nutrients or artificial supplements.

It is more of a safety measure. I didn't take them before getting pregnant with my son and although he was a preemie he had no issues. The folic acid in them is just a precaution to help prevent certain Neural Tube disorders, such as Spina Bifida.
